Common Causes
A non cancerous growth called a ganglion cyst is a common cause. Twisting the joint a lot and repetitive motions are to blame. The pressure created causes formation of the cyst. Working with your hand bent down and out is also a cause.
Wrist injuries and arthritis can also cause this condition. Weightlifters and cyclists commonly get ulnar tunnel syndrome. Constant grip pressure also triggers cyst growth. Additionally, sports like golf and baseball increase risk. A broken hamate bone in the wrist will bring it on.
Diagnosing Ulnar Tunnel Syndrome
Your medical history and symptoms are used to diagnose the condition. Your doctor also needs to look for areas that tingle, dryness, and weak muscles. Most symptoms appear in the hand. However, you may experience pain in the elbow. A doctor will need to confirm that a nerve is not trapped here. Because this presents the same symptoms.
An injury to your wrist or trauma warrants a check. X-rays and scans are done of the joint after an injury. Bone fragments pressing against nerves can cause this condition too. This is less common but it needs to be ruled out by the doctor.
