Common Sports-Related Arm and Hand Injuries

Accidents happen. In fact, anyone can fall onto an outstretched arm. Injury often occurs when playing sports. Or, when you trip over something.

The act of falling on your arm in this way can fracture the wrist. Injuries to your wrist and elbow can happen for other reasons too. Your technique may be off, or you overdo an exercise one day. Maybe you are not in as good of shape as you thought. The good news, you can prevent these problems!

    Elbow Conditions

Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow are very common. Interestingly enough, overuse and repetitive motions are the causes of both. And these injuries can happen to anyone, not just athletes. Using your arms in any repetitive way can cause the same damage. So, what is the difference between the two?

Tennis elbow causes pain to the outside of the elbow. Inflamed tendons occur by repeatedly hitting backhands. Tennis elbow is also known as lateral epicondylitis.

On the other hand, the injury golfer’s elbow is from a poor hitting technique. Inflamed tendons on the inner side elbow develop. Golfers elbow is also known as medial epicondylitis.

Medial collateral ligament damage is another common sports injury. This ligament stabilizes the elbow. Its commonly injured in baseball, racket sports, and ice hockey.

    Wrist and Forearm Injuries

Wrist fractures can occur from falling on an outstretched arm. Most commonly occurring in sports such as soccer and football. But, it can also happen with skateboarding and other exercises. As a matter of fact, a sprain occurs with a forced backward wrist movement. And then the ligament that connects the bones becomes torn.

    Hand and Finger Injuries

Rock climbing and football are common causes of hand injuries. However, incorrectly catching a ball causes hand and finger injuries. Thumb sprains occur when the thumbs forced backward. This tears or stretches the ligament.
